Unbeknown to most the W116 DOES have a 4 speed box - 1st is (almost always) inoperative such that they run on 2nd 3rd and 4th . I had my 6.9 twigged so it had 1st. on kickdown @ 5kph. I sold it after a dodo in a 535 tried to hose me off - and my monster scare soon thereafter. Having blown his doors off I let him pass but 1k down the road he was at another red light on a 4 lane T junction waiting to turn left - which was also where I was heading . I rolled up to the lights in the outside lane and as I got there they changed green. Guess what? I tramped my Brown Beast. Well...it dropped into 1st, the half shafts thumped, the front lifted, the revs went to 4,000, the car went sideways, blue smoke + bits of chomped out bitumen and rubber (225x14 Michelins) flew up like a rooster tail as I had to throw on a near full opposite lock to keep it on line through the left hander as the roaring and bashing blasted me out through the corner and 3/4 sideways up the road. Within 3 seconds I was 150 metres away - coming out sideways into just about a line ball straight set up. A glance in the mirror showed the 535 still back down near the corner on the other side of the huge ball of blue (rubber) smoke and bits of torn up bitumen chips. The bloody beast frightened the you-know-what out of me so I sold it soon after. I'm now on my sixth Benz (my 6.9 was my second) but nothing came close to the sheer monstrous aggression of that 6.9 in (REAL) 1st gear. I've run a dino Ferrari - which was a superb orchestration @ 7,000 RPM of sheer joy (140mph) plus mucked about with a Harley for 35,000 klms - but neither came close to the subliminal maniacal monstrosity of that 6.9 when (innocently) unleashed - how DID the Germans lose the war given that they can put gear like that together? |

I think that the chase sequences in Ronin are still unbeatable as they use pleanty of recognisable european saloons which is so rare to see in films. It is also one of the most realistic looking chase scenes I have ever seen, the fact that the used the best car of all time the w116 6.9 merely adds more gravity to the piece as it still is a world beater when it comes to executive saloons. When introduced I frimly believe that it was the best car in the world for looks performance and sheer power, it was a car of the 80s in the 70s and I feel any one who owns one is extremely lucky.
The 450 sel 6.9 could more than keep up with the peugeot 406 as it is quicker and has far more torque being a v8. Even today its power speed and luxury can not be matched, name one car which has the build quality of a tank the elegence of a swan, the ostentaceousness of a palace and the power of a supercar. This was truely the greatest Mercedes Benz ever produced and I challenge any one who feels differently.
This car came second in the cannon ball run for goodness sake up against super cars of the time it still held its own, it was a rally champion in Germany and a luxury vehicle for the wealthy and respected of our time, all in a days work for the w116.
The styling is another point to note, the perfect proportions, the powerful lines of the headlights the beautifully sculptured windscreen and sublime classic strong body lines which leave us to no doubt that this is one of the stuttgart greats. It is beautiful and yet ferocious at the same time coupled to its performance one has a true beast but which is never the less a beauty to behold, each time I look at my 450 sel I smile it is the only car I know which has that effect. The very pinnicale of transport for all time is the w116 450 sel 6.9 and I will be pleased to argue on its behalf for so long as there are those who think otherwise.
A great clip to by the way see how that famous hydro-pneumatic suspension makes short work of the lumps and bumps as it proves to be as nimble as any sports car despite its size and weight a true beauty to behold :) |

I was surprised to see that they chose an Audi A8 while they just said that they need a fast and HEAVY car... The A8 was constructed to have LESS weigth and is made from Aluminium instead of steel! The 6.9 Mercedes would have been a much better decision for their purposes!!

Correction: The camera car used in Ronin was a W124, but not an estate. It was actually a W124 500E. This is cnfirmed by the director on the DVD feature commentary.
Produced for only 3 model years (1992-1994) the 500E/E500 was a joint project between Mercedes-Benz and Porsche.
Heavily modified, it was the factory answer to the, then popular, AMG Hammer. It was equipped with a modified version of the 500SL's M119, 5Litre, 326hp, alloy 32v V-8. it rates 322 bhp and 354 lbs-ft of torque. 90% of which was available below 3000rpm.
Although not as fast as the Hammer, the 500E was street legal, emissions legal and less than 1/2 the price of a Hammer. In spite of this, the 500E still put up numbers that would make some 2-door sports coupes jealous: 0-60 in 5.9 sec and 1/4 mi. in 14.1 sec at 99 mph. not bad for a 3800lbs 4-door sedan fresh off the showroom floor.
Production numbers of the 500E are approx 14,000 units worldwide with around 2000 making it to North American shores |
