Intersection
Intersection 1994 (W113 - 280SL) this added after discussion on the mblist The movie Intersection was filmed around Vancouver and they used two or three cars for the movie. They were W113's. After the movie shoot they were auctioned off. All of them were poor quality cars with rust and many defects. At the time, I think they sold for the equivalent of about $9000 US. Too much for anyone who knew what they were buying. One was destroyed in the crash sequence. (author; David Godwin)
The following courtesy Hans Strom; The car that overturns is rigged with an inflatable bag on one side under the floor, this is what makes the W113 flip and do a couple of rolls. The exhaust is re-routed to accommodate this bag.
As a follow up I can mention that this (IMHO sentimental, but at least the lead character has good taste in cars....!) features shots throughout the movie, some of it great sequences, of a silver 280SL with hard top fitted. James Mahaffey has pointed out it was a Canadian pattern W113. The film director can not have much experience of SL driving, though, because a simple straight sudden braking from 80 mph on a dry, hard surface road produces a skid -- never happens when I brake...? What surprised me in the crash scenes was that the H/T stayed on although the car overturned several revolutions, and it did not cave in. Strong things these SL's.
More info; regarding Intersection: my boss was the mechanic on set for that movie and currently maintains 2 of the survivng cars, a close eye will notice that all the cars had their front bumper overriders set too far out, Why? A movie guy came to our shop looking for E-types for the movie, my boss convinced him that a 280SL was a superior vehicle and showed him one of our customers cars which had incorrectly placed overriders and a Nardi wheel--it was then the prototype for the movie cars. submitted by name removed by request
I enclose a previous message about this film: Kris Salzer wrote: ".... Turns out a lot of the existing old-style 230SL driver's side door panels were used up in "this movie" (ED.) where he skids his 230SL sideways into another car".
